My mother, who is a practicing Ayurvedic Practitioner gave me this recipe, she also made this for me after i gave birth which is very nourishing and gentle on the body for when you are recovering and re-building nutrition into the body tissues. I made this for Maelle for one of her first baby foods as i knew it would be gentle on her digestive system and is the perfect substitute to rice cereal. Below is the recipe from mumma Viv, and if you're interested in knowing more about your ayurvedic constitution you can get in touch with Viv via her website: http://www.vivsayurvedayoga.com.au/ and mention my code JORJA10%OFF for your first consult.
*Ayurvedic notes - Good for Vata, Pitta and Kapha - Good in all seasons
Ingredients: Serves 2
1/2 cup semolina
1-2 cups hot water or 1/2 cup water and 1 1/2 cups milk (i use almond milk for Maelle)
Raisins or sultanas - a handful (I don’t use raisins for Maelle just yet, instead I mash banana and add that or berries).
1 pinch ground cardamom (I use 1/4 to 1/2 tsp)
Cinnamon (same as above)
Almonds (soaked, peeled and chopped) 1/4 cup(optional) (i sometimes blend soaked almonds and mix through for Maelle)
Raw Sugar 1 - 2 tbs as per taste or can use Maple syrup. (I don’t use sweetener for Maelle as banana or berries add sweetness).
Ghee - 1/2 tbs kapha, 1 tbs for Vata and Pitta or coconut oil
Heat Ghee or Coconut oil in pan. Add semolina and gently roast over medium to low heat for approx 5 minutes until it turns a pinkish brown and it smells pleasant. Continuously stir it so that it doesn't burn.
Quickly add 1/2 cup hot water and stir well to avoid lumps, add remaining hot water (or milk) and cook stirring well. – wear an oven mitt as it will splutter when you at the hot boiling water.
Add raisins, cardamom, cinnamon powder and sugar.
Stir continuously, cooking for another few minutes until it thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
Garnish with almonds and serve hot.
I add cold almond milk to cool the porridge down and to make the consistency not so thick for baby.
It is very easy to digest but provides great satisfaction and a good start to the day.
An excellent food for infants, kids or older people
Traditionally women have this as breakfast after giving birth for the first 21 days before anything heavier.
A better option is to substitute 1 1/2 cups milk instead of water. This is particularly good for people suffering from low immune system, lack of sleep, ungroundedness and sluggishness. However, Kapha constitutions and people with kapha aggravations like chest congestion, runny nose and asthma should only use water.
